BW Offshore lands lead role for Canada’s Bay du Nord FPSO

BW Offshore has landed the lead role for Equinor’s Bay du Nord FPSO off Canada, the Oslo-headquartered company said on Monday.

The Head of Agreement confirms BW Offshore as preferred bidder for the FPSO supporting Canada’s first deepwater oil project, which is operated by Equinor in partnership with BP and holds an estimated 400 million barrels of recoverable light crude in its initial phase.

The FPSO will be equipped for up to 160,000 bopd and tailored for harsh sub-Arctic conditions, with a disconnectable turret system, extensive winterisation and emissions-reduction features including closed flare, heat recovery and high-efficiency power generation.

Pre-FEED work will conclude mid-September, after which the parties will enter a bridging phase ahead of full FEED in early 2026, subject to partner approvals. BW Offshore will establish a local office in Newfoundland to support the development.

“We are honoured to have been selected by Equinor, which shows confidence placed in BW Offshore’s capabilities to support such a pioneering Canadian project,” BW Offshore CEO Marco Beenen said.

BW Offshore engineers floating production solutions and operates a global fleet of FPSOs. It is listed on the Oslo stock exchange and employs around 1,000 people worldwide.

Equinor is a global energy company with core operations in oil, gas, renewables and low-carbon projects. In Canada, it leads the Bay du Nord development and holds several licences offshore Newfoundland.
